Disney's old man takes box office by storm

LONDON (Reuters) - Disney-Pixar's "Up," fresh from its major chart success in America, topped the UK box office over the weekend with one of the biggest opening takes of the year, according to Screen International on Tuesday.

The animated story of a cranky old man on a balloon-powered adventure made 6.4 million pounds and dwarfed comedy horror movie "Zombieland" which came in at No. 2 with ticket sales of 1.2 million pounds.

Comedian RickyGervais, as the man who will do anything other than lie to win the woman of his dreams in "The Invention of Lying," slipped a place to three.

Last week's No. 1, the latest remake of dance school musical "Fame," was down at four, with Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart coming in at five with "Love Happens."

Seasonal chiller "Halloween II" was new at six, just above animated children's movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" which fell to seven from four.

Also down three, to eight, was "Surrogates" with Bruce Willis in a future world where every human has a synthetic counterpart.

South African-based sci-fi thriller "District 9," was down at nine from six, with romantic comedy "(500) days of Summer," slipping two places to No. 10.
