John Mellencamp reluctantly started out his career as John Cougar by the persuasion of his management, telling him "Mellencamp" would be too hard to market. After his breakthrough in 1982, he added on his birth name to become John Cougar Mellencamp. Then starting in 1991, the musician dropped the Cougar completely.
