Pearl Jam created a full-blown scandal in 2003 when lead singer Eddie Vedder made clear his distaste for then-President George W. Bush. Vedder took his frustrations out on a Bush mask earning the anger of many Dubya fans in the audience, one fan said afterwards "When he takes what looks like the head of George Bush on a stick, then throws it to the stage and stomps on it, that's just unacceptable. We literally got up and left." The incident mirrored treatment of The Dixie Chicks who earlier in the same year made their criticism for George Bush public and faced a massive backlash, including organised album burnings.
