Mel gave birth to Madison Brown Belafonte on September 1, and credits her husband of four years, movie producer Stephen Belafonte, for making things so much easier the third time around.

"Ideally you want to have your loving partner who you've created this baby with by your side throughout everything, and in Angel and Phoenix's cases, that wasn't the set up," she told Hello.

Mel explained her first marriage to Jimmy Gulza, to whom she had her first daughter Phoenix, 12, was 'rocky,' and her relationship with Eddie Murphy "was over halfway through the pregnancy [with her second daughter]."

What was even harder for Mel during her pregnancy with Angel, 4, was that Murphy denied being the father of the baby, until DNA tests confirmed that in fact he was.

"This time I've done it with my partner - someone to come to every prenatal appointment with me, to get excited by every scan - and it feels like I've finally done it right," she said.

The mother of three described the newest addition to her family as "so gorgeous, and such a chilled baby."

The singer has been with her second husband and Madison's father for four years, after the long-term friends began dating in 2007.

Of Belafonte, 35, she said: "When I was moaning to Stephen about my trapped nerve I was thinking, 'I've never had anyone to complain to about these kinds of things.'"
