"Humbug" features 10 brand new Arctic Monkeys' songs and was produced by Queens of the Stone Age frontman, Josh Homme in the Mojave Desert and Los Angeles and James Ford in Brooklyn.
The band began to write and record demos for the third album in January 2008.
The band premiered new material from the unreleased album during their January 2009 tour of New Zealand, playing small venues in Wellington and Auckland ahead of the Big Day Out festival. Their first show in more than a year was on 13 January 2009 at Wellington Town Hall.
The band recorded a total of 24 songs; 12 in the legendary Rancho De La Luna studio with Josh Homme (where many rock bands including Queens of the Stone Age, UNKLE and Dave Grohl have recorded) as well as 12 in the New York sessions with James Ford.
Lead vocalist and guitarist, Alex Turner revealed that the band had listened to Jimi Hendrix and Cream while writing the new album.
He also said "When we were first thinking about the album, we were gravitating more toward the rock side rather than the melodic pop side," Turner says. "But as we started working it out, we thought, 'This should be a little more diverse ... let's have a little bit of both.'"
The album is available on CD, vinyl and via digital download.
